Restoration work on the big Markham winder continues to move quickly. Both sets of pistons and their rods have been machined-up by Markhams in Sheffield and are now in place in the cylinders. The cross-head slides are in place and the left-hand con-rod is ready to be fitted. The inlet and exhaust valve gear has been overhauled and refitted and is now awaiting the re-assembly of the connection to the governor. All the brake units have been overhauled and re-assembled as has the almost completely restored reversing engine. Meanwhile the stop valve and the throttle valve have been dismantled ready for overhaul and work continues on descaling the drum ready for repainting.
With the improved access around the winder combined with the reinstatement of the large windows in the South engine-house and the new lighting, the big Markham winder is starting to look resplendent in its fresh coats of green and black paint and the bright new brass work.
